Dr. Alex Kamenshikov Named a 2022 Aurora Awards Grand Prize Winner

May 1, 2023 (Cornwall, New York)—Cornerstone Family Healthcare proudly announces that Dr. Alex Kamenshikov, a podiatric physician with the Federally Qualified Community Health Center, was selected as a 2022 Aurora Awards Grand Prize Winner. Dr. Kamenshikov accepted the award in February 2023 at the Northern Lights Wound Workshop, a scientific workshop for advancing the knowledge of the utility of fish skin grafts for management of chronic wounds and lower extremity injuries in Reykjavik, Iceland.

There were a record number of international submissions in the 2022 Aurora Awards Case Competition by orthopedic, plastic, and vascular surgeons, podiatrists, and dermatologists. Dr. Kamenshikov was awarded this honor for his use of advanced wound care techniques, including the use of a cutting-edge fish skin graft, on behalf of one of his Cornerstone patients. His case was blindly reviewed by an external panel of judges and selected as a winner based on scientific value, novelty, and clinical relevance.

The patient in Dr. Kamenshikov’s winning case study suffered for more than two years with a hard-to-heal wound. When traditional wound treatment proved to be unsuccessful, Dr. Kamenshikov used fish skin for an alternative graft. Within six months, 90% of the patient’s wounds had closed. He reports that the patient is currently doing well and has continued healing.

“Many of our patients are at high-risk for complications,” said Dr. Alex Kamenshikov, DPM. “They face social and mental health issues, co-morbidities, and other life challenges. We’re constantly striving to improve patient outcomes—regardless of their circumstances. I’m grateful for the recognition I received, but more importantly I am proud of all the work we are doing here at Cornerstone.”

“Providing high-quality, patient-focused care has always been Cornerstone’s top priority,” said David Jolly, President and CEO of Cornerstone Family Healthcare. “Earning this award is an extraordinary achievement for Dr. Kamenshikov and exemplifies the entire organization’s commitment to elevating care for our patients and their families.”

Dr. Kamenshikov began practicing at Cornerstone Family Healthcare in 2018. His father was a pediatric burn unit surgeon and his mother a rheumatologist, providing him a strong attraction to the medical field. Dr. Kamenshikov received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from New York University. From there, he continued his medical career at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and served a three-year residency program at Coney Island Hospital, where he was the Podiatric Surgery Chief Resident.
